Major cyberattacks and data breaches continue to make headlines, reminding us just how important digital security has become. But what does that mean for the technology we use every day, like the smart lock on our front door?
A smart lock makes everyday life easier. But how can you be sure the technology behind it is properly protected? This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we're taking you behind the scenes at Bold to show you how we keep our smart locks secure. Because when it comes to accessing your home or business, convenience matters, but so does knowing your security is in safe hands.
Security starts behind the scenes
Unlocking your door with your smartphone, giving family members access without handing over a physical key, or managing who can enter your business. It all sounds simple, and that's exactly how it should be. But behind that simplicity lies a sophisticated security system designed to ensure that only authorised people can gain access.
Every time you use a Bold smart lock, the lock, app and secure platform work together to keep your access protected. From verifying access permissions to encrypting communication, there's a lot happening behind the scenes. That's why, at Bold, cybersecurity isn't just an additional feature. It's built into the very foundation of our technology.
Don't just take our word for it
Even the most carefully developed technology needs to be put to the test. And when it comes to security, an independent perspective is essential. That's why, in 2026, we invited independent cybersecurity specialists to assess our technology.
As part of an extensive security assessment, the experts examined how the lock communicates with mobile applications, how sensitive data is encrypted and how the system protects against unauthorised access.
The results? The technology tested demonstrated a strong level of security. In their report, the researchers concluded:
"Overall, the Bold SDK presented an exceptional security posture."
No critical, high or medium-severity vulnerabilities were identified during the assessment. Just one low-risk issue was found, which has since been resolved.
The researchers also highlighted the strength of the multiple layers of encryption, the protection of cryptographic keys and the security measures safeguarding digital access commands.
What does this mean for your security?
Cybersecurity might sound complicated, but the goal is simple: making sure you're always in control of who can access your property.
To achieve this, Bold uses multiple layers of security. Communication between your smartphone and the lock is encrypted, and a unique session key is used for every new connection. This helps prevent someone from intercepting a Bluetooth signal and reusing it to gain access.
The researchers also looked at how sensitive information, including cryptographic keys, is stored and protected. One of the things they checked was whether any of this information could accidentally appear in the software's log files. Once again, the findings were reassuring:
"No leaks were found."
This confirms that security goes beyond the connection between your phone and your lock. Protecting sensitive information behind the scenes is just as important.
The same applies when you give someone else access. The Bold platform checks access permissions to ensure that only authorised users can unlock your door. That means you stay in control of who has access, whether it's family members, colleagues or visitors.
And it's not just the digital technology that's designed with security in mind. Bold smart locks are also SKG*** certified and operate without a motor. This means your door cannot be fully unlocked remotely. Someone must always be physically present to turn the knob and unlock the door.

Security is an ongoing commitment
Cybersecurity is constantly evolving. New technologies create exciting opportunities, but they also bring new challenges. That's why we continuously work to develop, test and improve the security of our products.
Independent assessments are an important part of that process. They allow us to challenge our own technology, identify potential improvements and make sure security remains a priority as we continue to innovate.
Because ultimately, a smart lock should do more than make life easier. It should give you peace of mind, knowing that access to your home or business is in safe hands.
Smart and convenient. Secure by design. That's Bold.
